Sabbatical Leave Programme

Each year, staff members selected for the sabbatical leave programme have the opportunity to pursue research or study projects for a period of up to four months at recognised universities or independent institutions worldwide. Selected staff are placed on special leave with full pay for the period of the sabbatical leave.

Objectives

The sabbatical leave programme is an opportunity for staff members to:

  • add value to their contribution to the Organization and enhance their professional growth through projects of study or research on issues relating to the work of the UN
  • enhance dialogue and contacts between the UN and other organizations and institutions engaged in related work worldwide and
  • gain exposure to state-of-the-art research and practices on issues on the international agenda.

Application and Selection Procedure

All staff members with five years of service under continuing, permanent or fixed-term appointments with the United Nations Secretariat and who are expected to serve for no less than two years after the completion of the sabbatical leave are eligible to apply for the programme.

Detailed information on application and selection procedures is provided in Administrative Instruction ST/AI/2015/5 and an information circular ST/IC/2017/19 issued each year.
