The United Nations Staff Emergency Fund (SEF) is a small fund that makes resources available to staff members who encounter financial emergencies such as maintaining adequate food and housing for themselves and their families, and who are unable to obtain a loan from a lending institution.

The United Nations Staff Counsellor’s Office (SCO) administers the Fund and the Staff Counsellor serves as President of the Board of the SEF.

UN Secretariat staff members serving at Headquarters in New York or on temporary assignment or mission away from UNHQ may apply for the emergency financial assistance.

The SCO is available not only for financial counselling but also for emotional support which is often requested when an emergency situation arises.
