Nuria Castells, Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, UNEP

“The Sabbatical leave was an opportunity for me to assess my “market value” outside out of the UN. Sometimes, when we have spent nearly 20 years in one Organization, we do not have a clear perception of our value outside the UN walls.”

Nzigire Zihalirwa, Community Liaison Assistant, MONUSCO

“My subject of study was linked to what I am currently doing in my job. The conflict prevention, management, and resolution is part of our mandate in the promotion of peace and security as well as social cohesion among communities. This study also gave me the occasion to discuss with the Minister of Social Affairs from Central Africa Republic on conflict dynamic in their country which inspired me more in the achievement of my research.”

Omar Bello, Economic Affairs Officer, ECLAC

“Chile is a country that has come a long way in reducing the risk of disasters caused by earthquakes, however, it is a country that is lagging behind in disaster assessment. The new national disaster law recognizes that. My research work is a contribution in that direction because I drafted an exposure model for the municipality of San Antonio which could potentially be replicated for the whole country. A technical cooperation between ECLAC and the National Disaster Office of Chile in 2020-21 resulted from my work.”

Fatemeh Ziai, Director of Coordination and Shared Services, DPPA-DPO

“Being in an academic environment again and actually having time to study and research something I am really passionate about was the most satisfying aspect of my sabbatical leave.”

Atsuko Okuda, Regional Director, ITU

“After I completed my Sabbatical Leave Programme, I was offered a promotion to be the Regional Director of ITU Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, as the topic is relevant to my current position. This Sabbatical Leave Programme prepared me to take additional important responsibilities in my career.”

Adewuyi Adewumi, Civil Affairs Officer, UNMISS

“The research deepened my professional practice, expertise and knowledge on facilitation of communal conflicts, mediation of complex, intrigue and delicate conflicts. Now I’m in a better position in serving humanity and especially my interlocutors across South Sudan.”

Jorge Martinez, Economic Affairs Officer, ECLAC

"The sabbatical period allowed for a serious and deep debate with experts from various disciplines, on the challenges of development in small countries undertaking integration processes. These intellectual activities have led to new areas of work, has expanded the network of experts on issues related to my work, and has strengthened ties with various institutions working on issues related to development, the SDGs, and economic integration.”

Mehrnaz Mostafavi, Chief, UNTFHS

“The sabbatical leave provided me a comprehensive and evidence-based account of how to implement the Humanitarian Development Peace Nexus and reach the commitments made by Member States, the UN system and other partners towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the realization of the 2030 Agenda.”
