It’s the mid-point review time of year again!

It is almost November which brings us to the mid-point review stage of the performance cycle. This marks a key point for staff members and supervisors to review progress, identify changes to the work plan, and discuss areas that are going especially well, or may need adjustment.

The provision of constructive feedback is a crucial part of performance management and the mid-point review meeting. Having ongoing discussions and feedback between you and your supervisor during the cycle is important. It is also an opportunity to make sure that the work plan is followed. During the discussions, learning and development goals can also be reviewed.

In preparing for the mid-point review meeting, consider the following questions:

Work Plan

  • Were the goals we set in April realistic?
  • Has there been a shift in priorities?
  • Did we plan too many tasks?
  • Is the work plan missing anything?

Development/Learning Plan

  • Will I reach the five-day learning target?
  • Do I need to strengthen any competency areas?
  • If I cannot undertake formal training courses, can I develop and learn by shadowing another staff member or undertaking a short-term assignment?

Staff members are encouraged to review their accomplishments over the past six months as part of the discussion. If you are a supervisor, remember to recognize and show appreciation for good work. Use concrete examples when giving feedback. Raise performance issues, if there are any, and identify a plan of action together, if necessary.
