French Creative Writing Contest!

March is International Francophonie Month!

French is one of the official working languages of the United Nations, and being proficient in this language is an asset for the development of your career as an international civil servant.

As part of the francophonie celebrations taking place this month, staff members are invited to participate in the United Nations annual "French Creative Writing Contest". This year’s theme is “I love, I share… Peace”, based on the 2017 slogan of the International Organisation of Francophonie (IOF).

The contest is open until 30 April 2017 and entries will be accepted from all UN common system staff members (including the global Secretariat, Missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes).

There are three possible categories, depending on your level of proficiency:

  1. Level A1 and A2 – Select or create a picture on the theme of peace, then write a short related text inviting citizens and Heads of State to work towards world peace.
  2. Level B1 – In response to Secretary General António Guterres’ wish to make 2017 “a year for peace”, write a letter to the SG describing an experience, a wish or a dream of yours which is related to peace.
  3. Level B2 and up – Write a short story on the themes of peace, love and solidarity.

To enter, send your entry by e-mail to Pascal Schaller (schaller@un.org) using the subject line  “Creative Writing Contest”.

All entries must be written in French.

Please include your name, duty station, organisation, level of proficiency in French and the category you are participating in.

The awards ceremony will be held on 22 May in partnership with the IOF.

Don’t miss the opportunity to share your thoughts in French on peace!
