Orientation Hub - First six months

As you complete your first six months in your new role

This is a great time to reflect. What is going well? What could be better – and how might you contribute to positive change? And what are steps you can take to build resilience, develop your leadership skills, and advance your career?

For Career Support and to build a professional network and leadership skills, staff member with Unite ID can explore the UN Knowledge Gateway to learn how to join the:

  • UN Mentoring Programme in which staff of all levels and backgrounds can participate.

  • LIDERA, a leadership community that is a peer-to-peer learning space open to all staff, at any category and level, who wish to develop their leadership skills and contribute to creating a transformational and more sustainable organizational culture aligned with the UN Values and Behaviours.

To contribute to your own well-being and of that of your team, you may want to consider taking advantage of these United Nations resources:

For most of us, UN values are not just “what we do for work” but are part of our core beliefs, and there are many opportunities at the United Nations for us to “live the SDGs”.

Explore this interactive visual with links to several ideas for how we all can "Be the Change" in all we do.

The UN has staff unions because they provide a means for UN staff to collectively represent their interests and advocate for their welfare. These unions act as a crucial bridge between staff and management, ensuring a voice for employees in decisions that affect their work and working conditions.

All United Nations staff are represented by one of several staff unions. If you are a staff member or soon will be, find out how to become a dues-paying member and get involved.

Check out the upcoming International Days and Weeks. How can you connect these to your daily work, or celebrate or recognize these either at work or in your daily life?
