The Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM) in the Department of Management reminds all managers and staff that mid-point performance discussions for the 2017-18 cycle should be held before 30 November.
The performance cycle consists of a work plan – developed in April/May each year, ongoing feedback between managers and staff, a mid-point review discussion in October/November and an end-of-cycle appraisal in May/June, as depicted in the image above.
The mid-point review discussion is an opportunity for managers to build on feedback already given to staff, address progress against goals, discuss shifts in work priorities, address any performance issues and revisit learning and development goals. This is also an opportunity for staff to share their feedback about the workplan, specific goals and desired areas of development or learning.
In preparing for mid-point review meetings, managers and staff should consider the following questions:
Work Plan
- Were the goals we set last spring reasonable?
- Was there anything missing?
- Did we overreach?
- Are we on track?
- Is there a shift in priorities?
Development/Learning Plan
- How close am I to reaching the five-day learning target?
- Do any particular competencies need strengthening?
- If I cannot undertake formal training courses, can I develop my skills by shadowing another staff member or undertaking a short-term assignment in another unit?
